Hasenhuttl take note: “Dangerous” Southampton loanee has had some fans going bonkers – opinion

Southampton loanee Josh Sims continues to impress with his fine form down in League One. Doncaster’s win over Crewe Alexandra was a hard fought one after the away side took the lead in the 26th minute. Thanks to the Saints man, Rovers responded immediately and went on to secure all three points.

Sims’ performance marks his fifth goal involvement in just three games for Doncaster. His tally for the season is now up to four goals and five assists, following on from his influential displays for Southampton’s reserve team (via Transfermarkt).

A future for Sims with the Saints

Southampton are enjoying a strong start to their season thanks to the influence of the likes of Danny Ings and Che Adams in attack. Ralph Hasenhuttl recruited well during the summer window as well, bolstering his midfield options with Ibrahima Diallo, strengthening the backline with Mohammed Salisu and bringing in Theo Walcott on loan to dominate the wing.

However, a temporary spell for the former Saints man won’t take his side very far, unless both parties opt to make the move permanent next season. But with that being said, it could open up the chance for Sims to return to St Mary’s and make his mark on the club.

This is the 23-year-old’s third consecutive loan spell after struggling to make much of an impact with the Southampton senior side. Sims made a total of 27 appearances but only managed to contribute three assists in that time. His new found fiery form will have definitely pricked up Hasenhuttl’s ears and it wouldn’t be surprising if he is already thinking about how to potentially integrate him into the team next campaign.

Doncaster fans were heaping praise on the winger after his performance against Ipswich, with many in awe that they even managed to bag the Premier League ace. A similar thing happened after his goal in the defeat to Crewe Alexandra on Saturday.

Former boss Mauricio Pellegrino once waxed lyrical about a display from Sims back in 2018, describing him as a “dangerous” player.

Sims will certainly provide a new dynamic to the Saints, who are currently struggling with very flat performances from their wingers. Nathan Redmond in particular has gone silent, not yet getting involved in any goals this season. Doncaster will not want to give up Sims, but as Southampton eye a top ten finish, the England youth international will slot in finely upon his return.
